48 Hours in Marrakesh: An Enchanting Moroccan City
Welcome to Marrakesh, Morocco, a city and a country I never spell correctly! This captivating destination is known for its rich history, vibrant markets, and architectural wonders. One of the quintessential cities of Northern Africa, Marrakesh blends tradition with modernity, deserts with gardens, and narrow alleys with palace courtyards. 48 hours in Marrakesh is the perfect amount of time to get a sampler platter of the city and culture.
Day 1
(1) Yves Saint Laurent Museum & Jardin Majorelle
Start your day in Marrakesh by visiting the museum and gardens of Yves Saint Laurent, the renowned fashion designer. The museum is located within the Jardin Majorelle, showcasing a collection of his designs, creative ideas, and perfume collection. The vibrant blue building stands out amongst the green of the garden and the sandy architecture of the surrounding city. The oasis is a particularly relaxing destination for a slower start to your morning.
(2) Shop In The Medina
The Medina of Marrakesh is a UNESCO site bustling with souks (markets) and tons of hidden treasures. While it is technically a massive neighborhood encompassing much for the central part of Marrakesh, a good place to start is the Rahba Kedima Plaza (the header photo of this article).
Above all, you will be in awe of the spice selections, traditional crafts, and lively atmosphere. It’s an overwhelming place filled to the brim with merchants, but it’s well-worth the experience. This is the place to be if you need to purchase gifts for anyone back home! I even bought a small crystal-like substance from a spice-seller that was supposed to help with migraines. It actually worked!
(3) Koutoubia Mosque
Seen photos of Marrakesh? You’ve probably looked at the Koutoubia Mosque. Built in the 12th century, it has an impressive minaret and showcases Moorish architecture. Regardless of faith, all visitors can stroll through the gardens and admire the fountains. The inside of the Mosque, however, is reserved for Muslims.
Day 2
(4) Walk Through The Kasbah
Day 2 starts with a walk through the Kasbah, a historic fortress that was once a residential quarter for royalty and their court. It is now a maze of winding streets and vibrant markets. There are tall walls surrounding this complex which make the walk truly feel like completing a maze. Of course, if you love cats, you’ll see plenty during your time in the Kasbah!
(5) Visit The Badi Palace
Once (if!) you find your way out of the Kasbah, visit the Badi Palace. It is a beautiful site reflecting Moroccan architecture and design with a large central plaza and ornate decorations. This palace was built in the 16th century and visitors can explore the ruins of the old site.
(6) Tour The Mamounia Hotel
End the day by heading to the Mamounia Hotel. Wander around its lush gardens, take in the stunning views of the Atlas Mountains, and see if you can spot a famous celebrity. For those with thicker budgets, feel free to indulge in the world-class spa and eat at their gourmet restaurant. For those of us with tighter wallets, order one drink, then sit back and relax!
That’s 48 hours in Marrakesh, Morocco! As always, remember to be respectful of local Muslim culture. Men and women should wear long pants and long sleeves and in some places, a head covering will be required. Marrakesh can be a beautiful but overwhelming destination. The winding alleys and countless market stalls make it easy to get lost. Remember to never follow a shop keeper deep into the maze as they will ask for money to get you back out.
Happy Sampling! While this is the only destination I’ve visited in Africa (so far), feel free to check out my other travel guides here.
